Knocked Down a Few Notches

I may have been getting a little too braggy about how great I was feeling and how much I was still running, because yesterday kicked me right in the face.

I've been keeping up 6 days of training per week, including 4 running, 2 cycle, 1 swim in addition to strength training. Monday I banged out a killer strength session that left my arms shaking in the best way possible. Then I ran on the treadmill for 3 miles. I was holding an 8:15 - 8:30 mile pace and I felt awesome. It was one of those days where I was really feeling like a pregnant athlete.

Yesterday I headed to the gym and hopped on the treadmill first. Right from the beginning, heart rate was going crazy. I was only holding a 10 minute mile pace and I felt like my chest was going to explode. I couldn't get my heart rate under control.

After 5 minutes I decided to call it. Then I got on the stair climber to bang out some stairs. Again, my heart rate went buck wild. I gave it 5 minutes, and again I wasn't able to get it under control.

Then I did something that I haven't done in 7 years…I got on the elliptical. I hate the elliptical. Hate hate hate it. I always feel like it's time wasted. Time I could be running.

Yesterday the elliptical saved me.

I did a tough interval workout, hauling ass and sweating like a beast. My heart rate was normal for the effort I was exerting, and I didn't feel like I'd explode. It wasn't a run, but it was a fast paced cardio workout that my body was thankful for.

I'm happy that I gave the elliptical a try yesterday, because now I at least know that on those weird days I still have a fast paced option. I guess at 7 months pregnant I'm bound to have some weird days where my body has it's own agenda.

Actually, since third trimester arrived, it has totally destroyed me! But I'll talk more about that tomorrow.

I'm working on putting together a new strength workout. Since my mileage has decreased throughout my pregnancy, and I'm moving slower these days, I want to do some extra work on my strength and stability.

Time to head to the gym! I have 3 miles on the schedule for today! Fingers crossed I'm back to normal!!!

Here are some random pictures from my phone:

Happy Wednesday Everyone!!!

  1. Sorry you had a tough day of training. I know you've been able to work really hard so far, so I hope this is just one little blip in that road. I'm sure things will continue to get more difficult as you go (I know...not the most uplifting thought), but I am still so impressed by how much you're able to do.

And I also hate that elliptical machine, but it's saved me during times of injury....I'm sure I'll be using it to get me through some pregnancy workouts as well. As long as you keep moving, right?

Hope the rest of the week was better!
