Tami kindly thought of me to write a guest post, while she's enjoying snuggles and caring for Zoe and Aria. I've known Tami since 2011, when she hired me to be her triathlon coach. Along with swimming, biking and running, I've discovered a new passion, essential oils. I love using them to help support my training and racing.
Essential oils are the volatile, aromatic compounds that are extracted from trees, shurbs, flowers and stems and seeds. Sometimes tey are called the "life force" of the plant. Essential oils never expire. While essential oils seem to be the next trend, they are actually nothing new.
Historically, essential oils are the oldest known form of medicine, dating back to 4500 BC. They are helpful for supporting ALL body systems; skeletal, muscular and cardiovascular systems, as well as the structures and functions of the body.
5 Must Have Essential Oils for Runners
Pan Away: This blend is a runners best friend. It soothes the skin while providing warmth to muscles after exercise. While marathon training or after tough workouts, I used this oil frequently. To cover a large area, like your tired quads, add a few tablespoons of coconut oil to your palm, along with 3-5 drops of Pan Away and rub over your legs.
This past winter, instead of tortuous ice baths, I took a bath using this Soothing Muscle Soak Recipe. This soak made this key recovery step, something to look forward to. The following day, my legs felt less fatigued and less heavy.
Blend: Wintergreen, helichrysum, clove, peppermint
Valor: Roman soldiers used to anoint themselves with these oils before going into battle to give them courage. The oils instill confidence, something that can be useful before an important workout, race or other situation in life. Pre-race I turn this into a little ritual as I apply Valor across my collarbones and visualize the race unfolding. I attribute this in large part to my successful 2015 racing season.
Blend: Spruce, rosewood, blue tansy, frankincense
En-R-Gee: This essential oil revitalizes with a blend of stimulating oils that have been used traditionally to help restore mental alertness. Uplifting and strengthening as the name suggests, it boosts energy. I like to apply this blend topically first thing in the morning to start my day and help give me the energy to get out of the house to complete my morning workout. It's helpful during long drives to your race destination.
Blend: Rosemary, juniper, lemongrass, nutmeg, Idaho balsam fir, clove and black pepper
Thieves: Thieves essential oil is a must have in my household. After a depleting workout, it's a good idea to build the body back up. I love how it supports a healthy immune system and it's indispensable to me in the cold, dark winter months. I need to be training, not in home sick in bed.
Apply 1-2 drops to the soles of your feet.
Blend: Clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary
Lavender: A good nights sleep is so important for the body to recover. For runners it's especially critical. I rely on Lavender essential oil to help me fall asleep and sleep soundly. I use my diffuser to fill our bedroom with the aromatic, calming scent.
